Based on my experience, in manufacturing, if you don't have any measures of performance, productivity will be maximum 65-70%, no matter what positive attitude or good motivation people have.

More than "being told", I guess the problem typically is that they are never heard. If you listen to the work force 1 in 5 times there is high probability they will listen their managers for the other 4 times.
Discuss will them, take inputs etc etc. Its a bit socialist approach but only 1 in 5 times.

cheers

Oh,just for the record, my teenage daughter does clean her room. While I do have to agree with you, I have found that MOST people don't fail to reach goals because of lack of enthusiasm or loyality to any given project. While it would take much more space to go into detail, here are the basics. Many managers are not into their jobs, if you will do their work, they will let you. Sounds cold I know, but hear me out. Everyone wants to be in charge, but do we really want the responsibility of the position? Are you willing to put in the work? It's a lot like piano lessons, Don't practice don't play. I can give you several examples of managers that love big pay checks, they love to attend meetings, but then they farm all their projects out. Now delegating is a skill, but so is transfering information and so is oversite. Using the cleaning of the room example, My daughter not only knows what is expected of her, I also gave her a example of how I wanted it done, when, and why. Then I gave her the resources to do the job. I also asked a important question, what do you need to do the job and do you think this will work. In manufacturing I frankly see demand blindly driving production. I can make up any number but if you don't have the resources it's all make believe. Then your credibility is gone. Finally I do go in and help my daughter clean. There's a difference between giving orders and being a leader.

Great article. Thanks for the reminder.
In the end, the only thing that works is listening.

I believe this is the approach I prefer- focus on the positive to overcome the negative! Is it possible to share how you do this- the process you use to find the positives, build on those and how that overcame some negative traits? Thanks.
